Mexican Miners and Metalworkers Union Declares Support for Napoleón Gómez
The Miners Union says that the US$ 55 million in dispute are accounted for in the union’s balance sheet.

MEXICO: The Miners Union has issued an official communiqué to counter company accusations that the union’s leader, Napoleón Gómez, appropriated US$ 55 million.

The communiqué declares complete support for Gómez Urrutia and explains that the US$ 55 million paid to the union from the proceeds of the privatisation of the Mexicana de Cananea and Mexicana de Cobre companies, in 1998 and 1990 respectively, are fully accounted for in the union’s balance sheet. The communiqué said that its independent status only required it to provide financial information to its members, but that the union was making the information available.

The communiqué affirms that "the National Executive Committee and the Vigilance and Justice Committee, presided over by the democratically and legally elected Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, agreed to make information related to the above-mentioned funds available to a Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, whose purpose it is to clarify where the money went."

It also maintains that statements made about the use of the US$ 55 million are "defamatory", given that these resources were the responsibility of the union and have never been in the name of any individual. It added that contrary opinion was only a smokescreen created by the Grupo Mexico owner, Germán Larrea Mota Velasco, to cover up his responsibility for the explosion at the Pasta de Conchos mine, which caused the deaths of 65 miners.

The union says that all the US$ 55 million are accounted for in the union’s balance sheet, and provided details showing payments of US $29,243,446 and the remaining balance of US $25,756,554.
