Victory in Mexico
Napoleón Gómez Urrutia is recognized as leader of the Mexican Miners’ Union, announced the Secretariat of Labor and Social Security (STPS).

Mexico: On the morning of Monday the 16th at 9:45 a.m., the General Directorate of Registration of Associations of the Secretariat of Labor and Social Security submitted the official notification of the taking of note in favor of Napoleón Gómez Urrutia as General Secretary of the National Union of Mining, Metalworking and Similar Workers of the Mexican Republic (SNTMMSRM).

That measure is not a new taking of note for Gómez Urrutia, but rather the recognition of the registration which he obtained in 2002 and which was suspended on 17 February 2006, when he was deposed by the Fox government and was replaced by a government appointed Elías Morales.

This is a genuine victory for the mining workers, indicated the union leaders.

At a press conference, the union leader’s lawyers Carlos de Buen Unna and Néstor de Buen Lozano explained the decision of the STPS. Néstor de Buen Lozano said, “I am very satisfied, and happy, with this result, which is not the final result, but for us as the labor party it is the definitive result. Many things remain to be settled, because there are still cases pending in which our intervention was not recognized, and that will have to be corrected, and finally, simply justice was finally done in this very sensitive matter of the recognition of the genuine representation of the Union.”

He added that “this is an example for the Mexican labor movement, which has always been somewhat abused, now it has a reason to calmly confront any situation and will be well aware that with unity among the workers you can go a long way.”

He stressed the importance of the foreign union organizations which applied to the International Labor Organization (ILO) to convince the Mexican government to correct “this totally aberrant situation; that was also useful, and I think we should pay tribute to those colleagues of the union organizations who also made an important contribution to this result.”

The International Metalworkers’ Federation launched an ILO complaint against Mexico in March 2006, following the removal of Gómez Urrutia.
