ILO recognises CAW’s gender equality work
The ILO has included CAW in a collection of good practice examples of gender equality in the workplace.

GENEVA/CANADA: The International Labour Organisation (ILO) Bureau for Gender Equality has included the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) in its recent compilation of examples of 25 good practices entitled “Gender Equality and Decent Work, Good Practices at the Workplace”.

Recognising CAW’s long history of fighting for women’s rights in the workplace, the ILO Bureau for Gender Equality describes how the union’s current equality strategy seeks to combine both gender-mainstreaming initiatives and affirmative measures for women.

CAW’s activities on gender equality include seeking gender-balanced representation in the organising, undertaking gender-related research and negotiating gender-sensitive collective agreements.

Other activities include bargaining for Women’s Advocates positions within major Canadian companies and donating CAD$100,000 (US$83,000) to women’s shelters across the country each year.
