Agreement reached at Honda

The agreement reached between workers and management at the Honda Motor Cycle & Scooters India Ltd factory includes the retention of the employees’ union.

INDIA: Honda workers and their employees’ union have reached an agreement with management at the Honda Motor Cycle & Scooters India Ltd factory in Gurgaon. The agreement was reached late on July 29 during conciliation talks called for by the government after the violent clashes that had occurred several days earlier between workers and police. Details of the agreement have not been released publicly, but it is believed that the agreement includes:

  • reinstatement of the 50 suspended and four dismissed workers;
  • retention of the employees’ union;
  • Payment of salaries withheld in May and June 2005;
  • Paid leave for injured workers;
  • Workers agreeing to the return of normal production; and
  • Union agreeing to not raise any demands for one year.

The future of the 62 workers arrested during the violence and who remain in prison is not known.Aug 02, 2005 – Anita Gardner
