IMF World Congress 2009
Metalworkers from different countries of the world are going to participate in the 32nd IMF World Congress taking place in Gothenburg, Sweden, May 24th – 28th.

Nearly 800 delegates from unions around the world will come together to debate the most important issues for metalworkers globally.

The theme for this year's Congress is Secure Jobs for a Secure Future and the impact of the global financial crisis and the growth of precarious work will be critical issues.

A key outcome for the Congress will be the endorsement of the IMF's action programme for the next four years, which will set out the best ways to improve rights and conditions for metalworkers.

Meetings for the Finance, Executive, Central and Rules committees and the IMF's Women's Conference will also take place around Congress.

Why Should Precarious Workers Join Unions?
We asked 7 Congress delegates a question
"A real challenge to neo-liberalism"
Building strong national unions, strengthening collective bargaining, defending workers' rights, building a counterweight to the power of transnational corporations and fighting for sustainable trade, development and employment will be at the heart of IMF's work over the next four years.
“Strength lies in unity, not division”
On Tuesday morning the newly elected IMF President Berthold Huber addressed the delegates to the 32nd IMF World Congress and thanked them for their confidence in him. He also made it clear that what was needed now was to unite forces to meet the challenges confronting unions.
We must avoid wage deflation
A reduction of wages is the biggest threat to the economy. For that reason wage deflation must be avoided at all cost. So said Heiner Flassbeck, former deputy finance minister in Germany, now the head of UNCTAD’s Division on Globalization and Development Strategies, when he addressed to the IMF Congress in Gothenburg.
Resolutions call for change
Delegates at the IMF 32nd World Congress unanimously adopted a number of resolutions today to improve workers´ health and safety, preserve permanent jobs, tackle climate change and xenophobia, and remove barriers to organising in the U.S.
