Workers' rights in China |
|

|
|
|
China is the sixth largest trading nation in the world. Its economy grew an average of 9.4 per cent per year since 1978. The number of multinational companies with investments in China is increasing, as is the number of incidents of labour unrest.
Many trade unions affiliated to the IMF have members that work for multinationals operating in China. Through the WTO and free trade agreements, metalworkers around the world often find themselves in competition with China.
Yet worker and human rights in China do not meet international standards and independent trade unions are illegal.
It is urgent that further action be taken to improve the rights of workers in China. A move that will have a significant impact on workers all over the world.

EMF publishes research on China and the EU
[November 10, 2006]
The European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF) has published a research report on China and the EU entitled "European industries shaken up by industrial growth in China: What regulations are required for a sustainable economy?" The report is the result of the year-long EMF China project aimed at making a common assessment of China's economic future and its consequence for Europe based on the situation in three metal sectors: steel, shipbuilding and automotive. The paper is published in English, German and French on the EMF website.
